Acoustic Evidence of the Prevalence of the Emphatic Feature over the Word in Arabic
نویسنده
چکیده
An acoustic study is carried out to see whether the phenomenon of pharyngalization and/or velarizsation is confined to the emphatic consonant and the adjacent vowels or it extends over the whole word in Arabic. Measurements in Hz of F1 & F2 of front unrounded vowels in monosyllabic, bisyllabic and trisyllabic words in ISA having emphatic vs. non-emphatic consonants were made. They showed significant narrowing between F1 & F2 for vowels in the vicinity of emphatic consonants than those in the vicinity of non-emphatic consonants. This is attributed to the secondary coarticulatory configuration formed in the pharyngeal region by the projection of the root of the tongue toward the back wall of the pharynx and possible lowering of the velum toward rising tongue dorsum which prevails, though in different levels of significance, over the other syllables of the

Abstract of spoken word recognition is proposed. This model is particularly concerned with extraction of cues from the signal leading to a specification of a word in terms of bundles of distinctive features, which are assumed to be the building blocks of words. In the model proposed, auditory input is chunked into a set of successive time slices. It is assumed that the derivation of the underly...
متن کاملAcoustics and perception of emphasis in Urban Jordanian Arabic
Acoustic and perceptual effects of emphasis, a secondary articulation in the posterior vocal tract, were investigated in Urban Jordanian Arabic. Twelve speakers of Jordanian Arabic recorded both consonants and vowels of monosyllabic minimal CVC pairs containing plain or emphatic consonants in initial and final position to investigate the extent of coarticulatory effects of emphasis. In general,...
متن کاملPharyngealization in Assiri Arabic: an acoustic analysis
Five native speakers of Assiri Arabic read word lists comprising contrasting pairs of plain and emphatic (pharyngealized) consonants in three vocalic environments (/i/, /a/, /u/). Although considerable individual variation in expression was apparent from auditory and acoustic analysis of the tokens, the most consistent acoustic correlate of the plain-emphatic contrast appeared to lie in the tra...
متن کاملImplicit and Explicit Instruction and EFL Learners’ Implicit Knowledge Development: Evidence from Word Monitoring Task
Research on the effect of implicit and explicit instruction on developing learners’ explicit knowledge by the use of measures of explicit knowledge abounds in the literature. However, measuring learners’ implicit knowledge employing fine-grained measures has rarely been the concern of researchers in the field. Therefore, the present study is an attempt to scrutinize the effectiveness of implici...
متن کاملImplementation of an adaptive burst DQPSK receiver over shallow water acoustic channel
In an environment such as underwater channel where placing test equipments are difficult to handle, it is much practical to have hardware simulators to examine suitably designed transceivers (transmitter/receiver). The simulators of this kind will then allow researchers to observe their intentions and carry out repetitive tests to find suitable digital coding/decoding algorithms. In this p...
